Sessions

The majority of my work in my studio is for clients from across the globe, using the internet and ftp (file transfer protocol), and I have been doing this for over 12 years now, so I can honestly say I have extensive experience in this field.

Here is how it works:

  1. The client contacts me, and enquires about my rates and availability.
  2. Once everything is agreed, the client then sends me a lo-fi track for me to listen to (normally an mp3 file, or something similar). I can then ascertain exactly how long it will take me, and give them an accurate estimate.
  3. The client then sends the following files to me:
    • a drumless mix with at least 1 bar of click at the front end (MP3 is fine)
    • a click track (again mp3), for me to synchronize to
    • their rough idea of what drums they want (this can also be left to my discretion, of they don’t know).
    • information regarding the file type (WAV, AIFF SDII etc) and quality (eg: 48k/24bit) and anything else I might need to complete the setup.

Once I have laid down a drum track that I feel is right, I will mix a rough version and e-mail it to them for approval. They can then comment on what I have done, and suggest any changes, if necessary.

Once I have the approval of the client, I send them a bill (normally via paypal). When I receive the payment, I then upload the master files (I record my drums on 12 separate tracks) in whatever format they specify, to my box.net ftp account, and inform them where they can go to download them.

I have used a number of ftp sites and systems, and I have come to the conclusion that the one that works best for me, and is most reasonably priced is box.net. It is incredibly easy to use and ridiculously quick to upload, as well as being utterly secure and rock solid.
