Drive to Glasgow

Up early and pack the car… I was supposed to leave by 9am, but I was waiting for delivery of two new mixing desks, from Allen and Heath. They had them with a “guaranteed before 9″ courier. Needless to say, I finally gave up at 9.20, and left. Daniela called me from home at 10am to say thay had arrived, but there was no way I could turn back… the traffic had been so bad in the opposite direction that it would have taken me hours to retrace my steps. So I arranged for them to deliver it to Glasgow by tomorrow morning. I hope they arrive. I need the extra channels that they provide. It’s weird setting off on a “tour” in your own car. Doesn’t really fel like being on tour…I made it to Manchester by 12.30pm, and found my way to where John Jorgenson is staying… just outside Sale. After a brief stop for a coffee, we hit the road. This was  much more fun… driving along, chatting, listening to CDs  (Led Zeppelin “remasters” was the CD du jour – headbanging up the M6 motorway). We made Glasgow (and the rush hour traffic) by 5pm, and circled around for a while before eventually finding the entrance to the Hilton. It’s right on the ramp to the M8 city motorway, and there’s a tiny little separate off-ramp before you have to commit yourself to the motorway, so you have to have great reactions. JJ navigated me there, despite the city planners’ attempts to thwart our efforts! Luckily the SECC (Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre) is only a couple of blocks away… although I have to work out exactly how to get IN!I set off to try and contact Pete Mills, which is almost impossible considering the production office phone numbers in the itinerary are fictitious!  After a lot of driving around the empty parking lots outside, I finally found a way in!!  Once in there was little I could do, apart from give Pete the drums I had brought up. There was no power on stage, so we couldn’t do any programming. I gave up and returned to the hotel with Lynette (Jackson, our promotions manageress). JJ and I went out for dinner with Lynette and the people from Sennheiser. Great Italian restaurant…. Wonderful food!  Back in the room, I slept badly. I was woken by a phone call at 3am, to the sound of giggling women (probably drunk) at the other end. There was a huge party on downstairs, and I’m sure they were part of the party group. They called twice more, before I called reception and put a “Do Not Disturb” on my phone line.
