Drive to Bettendorf, Iowa. Up at 8am, shower, dress, pack… downstairs to pay incidental charges, and into the cafe for breakfast before we set off. What can I say about the bus journey… lots of flat land, with the remains of cornfields… lots of freeway… I caught up on e mail replies… had a nap, watched a movie… etc…At lunch time we stopped off at a place called the Hen House, somewhere just inside Illinois. It was actually pretty good. I had the all-day breakfast omelette and hot tea (someone must really teach the people in this country how to make a decent cup of tea… it’s just not the same… sorry to be so partisan, but that’s one thing that gets my goat!). We arrived at the Jumers Castle Lodge in Bettendorf at around 5pm. What a bizarre place! Built to look like a German castle… My room has the smallest window you’ve ever seen, and it looks out onto a narrow alleyway, with daylight about 50 feet away! It’ssupposed to be haunted, too. By a cleaner who choked to death on a candy!! Apparently, ghostly vacuuming can be heard on the 4th floor at night. We’ll soon see, as I’m on the 4th floor!
