The Tonight Show

Jay Leno. 11am pick up, for camera runs etc… I met up with the rest of the band at the studio. All still jet lagged from a week ago! The studio was almost as cold as LWT, but not quite. I doubled my dose of vitamins this morning, knowing how my resistance is affected by transatlantic travel. The run through was smooth enough, and then came the waiting, and the waiting. This business is 90% hanging around and 10% playing (if you’re lucky!). Elton came and hung out in the dressing room, chatting and trading anecdotes. Jay Leno dropped by to talk over the questions with EJ about 1 hour before showtime. Nice guy – laid back, easy going, relaxed. The show started at 5pm (they pre-tape in front of a live audience, and edit it for transmission later that evening), and comedian Tim Allen was on before Elton. I don’t envy any comics on the same show as EJ. Particularly when he is on form, and tonight: he was blistering! Tim Allen didn’t stand a chance. Elton outdid him at every turn, and then we went on and played a killer version of “The Way You Look Tonight”. What a talent. In the evening I met up with my good buddy Jim Wilson (piano technician to the stars), and joined my business partner, Andrew Brel, and the other two members of the Fleshdevils at a great Mexican restaurant in downtown Burbank. The frozen margaritas and Corona flowed like water!
